It’s this kind of thing that shows that Renwick has still got the flair to weave a complex mystery that has always made Creek so popular. I’d originally planned to watch the first few minutes of “Daemon’s Roost” just to see whether the show was anything like what I imagined it would be like, but I ended up watching the whole thing. Jonathan and Maddy are prompted to investigate by the dead woman's daughter – an old flame of Jonathan's – along with the debonair Detective Inspector Gideon Pryke, the police officer officially in charge of the case.

Ok, there wasn’t anything from the cyberpunk genre in there, but it was still one of the best modern TV shows I’ve seen for a while. Worst of all, Jonathan’s new sidekick — his wife Polly — is the antithesis of his previous Watsons: she’s reluctant in the extreme for him to get involved in his demystifying any more, and complains at great length about pretty much everything that he does and was and is.Events take a twist when a wristwatch found at the scene belongs to a woman who has been kidnapped and held for ransom. Unfortunately, throughout the many series and specials, Renwick's writing of the main female character playing opposite Creek has been deeply irritating to me as a woman. Subsequent events, with a man changing his physical appearance in a matter of seconds while threatening the journalist who wrote the review, also prompt several questions. An illusionist, whose twin sister died when an escape trick went wrong and she was partially sliced in half, is found dead in her snow-covered garden after her husband witnessed her shooting herself.

After an awkward break-up some months ago, Jonathan and Carla – now married to the producer of a Crimewatch-like television show – unite to investigate a serial killer who wears a Davy Crockett hat and kills people named after flowers. Well, the latest adventure found Creek in Daemons' Roost, the home of Ken Bones’ Nathan Clore, legendary horror director with a dark past. I’m honestly surprised that I’ve never watched an episode of this show before, despite hearing about it occasionally.

Anti-money’, a strange sign-off on a letter in a scientist’s bedroom is missed by Creek as a reference to ‘antimony’ the chemical element, but the detective somehow manages to piece together a dying man staring at a mobile phone, then a film poster containing the word ‘Yeti’ to surmise he (obviously) means the man stood near him is a ‘phone-y’.

With his health now failing he has summoned home his stepdaughter Alison, to share with her, finally, the chilling truth of what happened to her family there when she was just a child. The police surround the garage but when they open the door, the killer has vanished, leaving only the daughter who has no memory of the incident. Earlier this evening, I was feeling somewhat tired when I happened to remember a comment on my latest “Sherlock” review which recommended the “Jonathan Creek” Christmas special.Meanwhile Jonathan is being pursued by Patrick Tyree (Ryan Oliva) – a man he put in jail – with Polly and her friend Nina ( Jo Martin) preoccupied by a local scarecrow competition. An early misguided joke about Polly accidentally mentioning ‘cotton picking’ in front of one her new black acquaintances, proves crucial as we’re lead to assume that her husband working at the property is the black CCTV installer, rather than a white bearded taxi driver seen momentarily at the start. One of the things I liked best about it was the fact that Warwick Davies played the vicar (very well) but there was no ‘thing’ about his height.

How in the hell you can end up married to someone who is so keen to wipe from existence everything you were before meeting them and tell yourself this is a good thing is beyond me, and a weird narrative choice on Renwick’s part. Indeed, you can’t help but feel that maybe the Christmas special format is somewhat stifling Jonathan Creek, with Renwick spreading himself too thin over 90 minutes. Christmas special of the BBC crime drama starring Alan Davies as scruffy amateur detective and master of illusion Jonathan Creek. And with no closure in sight (outside of a final glimpse of the windmill), perhaps there’s life in the old duffel coat yet. Warwick Davis provides enthusiastic comic support as an illusion-loving vicar, while Creek's much-missed duffle coat makes a cameo. One more false step and it would probably be time to hang up the duffle coat for Creek and the series. Onto Daemons’ Roost and possibly the stepfather being the mystery or possibly the ancient warlock thing.
