The good news is there are plenty of crunchy, whole-grain cereal alternatives you can enjoy daily, without consuming too much of the sweet stuff—and you don’t have to sacrifice taste. The Prevention Test Kitchen staff grabbed some spoons and dug into the healthiest options out there to find the most delicious healthy cereal brands. This is the second time Kellogg’s has introduced cereal pots, after initially launching a similar format in 2008. When you plan on taking your cereal with you, it’s important to store it so it stays crunchy and doesn’t make a mess in your lunch bag or box. There are several different ways you can do this depending on how you like to eat your cereal.

Cereals like cornflakes or puffed rice served with low-fat milk – can be part of a healthy breakfast but are low in fibre so not as good a choice as a wholegrain cereal. Adding a piece of fruit will help to balance your breakfast as well as making it more filling to eat. These cereals, and their wholegrain equivalents, usually come with added sugar and salt but also often have added vitamins and minerals which are good for your overall health. Other low-fibre unsweetened cereals (like crisped rice or malted flakes) will be similar from a heart health point of view. A good source of vitamins and minerals; A fun part of any balanced breakfast at home or on-the-go; Enjoy with or without your favorite milkSince oats are whole grains, they are rich in fiber and important nutrients. One cup (234 grams [g]) of cooked oats provides 4 g of fiber, as well as 59% of the Daily Value for manganese, 23% for selenium, 21% for zinc, and 14% for phosphorus ( 3). Oatmeal is incredibly versatile and can be prepared in many ways. It is often boiled with water or milk and then topped with fresh fruit, cinnamon, or nuts. Healthy, family-favorite cereals perfect for kids and adults; Deliciously sweet and crafted to help bring energy and smiles to busy mornings In fact, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated what it means for food to be “healthy.” It even laid out the following as a parameter for cereal: “Cereal would need to contain ¾ ounces of whole grains and contain no more than 1 gram of saturated fat, 230 milligrams of sodium, and 2.5 grams of added sugars.” We updated this article in March 2023 to add more information about each featured product, based on extensive research done by our team.

Granola with chocolate has all the same issues that regular granola has, in that it's high in fat and sugar, but with added chocolate - so even more fat and more sugar! Granola with chocolate is best enjoyed as an occasional treat.I prefer not to take glass containers with me to go. So, I use a container that’s made for cereal to go. The bottom portion of the container is made to hold your milk. And, the top portion of your container is made to hold your Cheerios™ Oat Crunch Oats ‘N Honey. And, it comes with a spoon as well. Naturally, the first place you should look on the nutrition label is the carbs category, says Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D.N., creator of BetterThanDieting.com and author of Read It Before You Eat It - Taking You from Label to Table. “These days, popular diets bash carbs, so people think if this is a high number, they shouldn’t have it,” she says. “But really, you need to think about portion size and the type of carb.” It’s also important to consider protein, fat, and other nutritional info before pouring yourself a bowl. Of course, Cheerios have always been my favorite whole grain oat cereal. They have a great selection of different varieties so that there’s something for everyone in my family to enjoy.

Firstly we have significantly increased the size of the pots but kept the same price so it’s better value. It’s also across a bigger range of cereals based on what shoppers told us they wanted and the launch will be supported by a strong promotional plan. Wholegrain cereals like bran flakes, malted wheat cereal and wheat biscuits are high in fibre and will also have sugar and salt added to them usually, so avoid adding any more sugar and opt for fruits or berries for sweetness. The wholegrains mean they are high in fibre and so have benefits for your digestion too as well as your heart health. We’ve ranked the most popular cereals from best to worst based on their nutritional value – in particular added sugar, fibre content, salt. Read on to get your day off to a heart-healthy start. 1. Porridge Porridge is our top choice for a heart healthy breakfast – when it is made with low-fat milk or water and unsweetened. All porridge oats are wholegrains and they all contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which can help lower your cholesterol level if you have 3g or more of it daily, as part of a healthy diet. (A 40g serving of porridge oats contains 1.6g of beta-glucan.) As well as this, you’ll be getting the fibre from the whole grains, plus there is no added sugar or salt. Meet the experts: Kristen Smith, R.D., Atlanta-based dietitian, founder of 360 Degree Family Nutrition, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D.N., creator of BetterThanDieting.com and author of Read It Before You Eat It - Taking You from Label to Table.

There are 14.8 billion breakfasts eaten outside the home and we believe our cereal pots will provide the perfect harmony at breakfast by offering shoppers cereal in a convenient format they can eat anywhere. It presents a huge opportunity for retailers to drive incremental sales in store.” No added sugar muesli contains a mixture of grains, fruit and nuts and the combination will differ between brands and varieties so the amount of oat beta glucans will be more variable than porridge, which is made only of oats. The dried fruit that is added should provide all the additional sweetness you need and will also count towards your five a day but choose a muesli with no added sugar and be aware that many fruit and nut mueslis (especially tropical fruit versions) contain sweetened dried fruit, which means they have sugar added even if it isn’t listed separately on the ingredients. Banana chips are another popular muesli ingredient that will contain added sugars and saturated fats. Opt for brands with five grams or less of sugar per serving. “A good thing to know is that when there’s a lot of added sugar, there will also be a high carbohydrate number,” says Taub-Dix. The closer the sugar number is to the carb number on the nutrition label, the more sweet stuff and less grains there are in the box. So keep sugar under control by choosing brands with about five grams or less of sugar per serving. If you enjoy your cereal with milk whether it’s traditional milk or non-dairy milk like almond or soy milk, you need to store the liquid in a container so it doesn’t leak. And, you’ll want to keep your cereal separate so it stays crunchy. So, you have a few options if you want the best cereal to-go containers.Dawson added: “We trialled a cereal pot a few years ago but we didn’t get it right so what can retailers expect this time round? Keep it old school and put your milk in a small crystal jelly jar with a tightly fitting lid. Then, you can put your Cheerios™ Oat Crunch Oats ‘N Honey in your favorite plastic container. Be sure to leave enough room to add bananas or berries and the milk. On those days when I am pressed for time, it’s really tempting to just skip breakfast and grab a coffee as I rush out the door. On a truly bad day, I’ll grab a donut or pastry on the way to work. It never keeps me satisfied until lunchtime. And, I feel bad about skipping breakfast at home.
