In a turn of events, Cedric Hardcastle takes a position on Barringtons’ board, and the outcome of the chairman vote becomes more uncertain.

Hardcastle is the Chairman of the Farthing Bank and he will join forces with the Barrington’s to try and thwart Don Pedro Martinez and his sons.

Who, why, when … She only stopped pacing when a starched-collared, smartly dressed nurse inquired, “Are you Mrs. Be Careful What You Wish For' is a terrific thriller which some reviewers clearly have enjoyed as a 'stand-alone' novel. Be Careful What You Wish For, the fourth instalment in Jeffrey Archer’s The Clifton Chronicles, opens with Harry Clifton and his wife Emma rushing to hospital to learn the fate of their son Sebastian, who has been involved in a fatal car accident.

Then, without warning, Cedric Hardcastle, a bluff Yorkshireman who no one has come across before, takes his place on the board of Barringtons. Archer also continues to present an unremarkable prose, but one cannot take away from him his ability to surprise the reader over and over. The series is supposed to be about the life of one man, Harry Clifton, but Harry takes a backseat in this story. Even the cliff hanger at the end is not very intriguing, because there are only two possible resolutions, and the sequence of events following either of them is nothing to look forward to if the writing continues to be so insipid.

We do not have many details and the characters’ background to have a complete idea of what the Clifton Chronicles are about. Each character has their own agenda and through a series of complex machinations Archer builds disparate segments of the story which come together in a rather dramatic fashion. And those who have not read the previous volumes I suggest reading the thriller volumes first as you won't be able to understand the story if won't read them first. By the standards of what goes as the baddies in books of our time, the villains of the novel - while without a shade of grey - are almost as mild as those in Jane Austin novels or equivalent of street thugs in their power and influence. And with that decision, the story takes yet another twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But, a very big but, this episode in the seemingly endless Clifton chronicle, really is rather well put together. Be Careful What You Wish For opens with Harry Clifton and his wife Emma rushing to hospital to learn the fate of their son Sebastian, who has been involved in a fatal car accident. He is so easy to read, I wanted to keep reading just to find out what was happening to the Cliftons and the Barringtons and in what kind of troubles they managed to get into this time (the best part in my books). The series chronicles the life and times of Harry Clifton, his wife, Emma Barrington, and Emma's brother and Harry's best friend, Giles Barrington. This causes an upheaval that none of them could have anticipated, and will change the lives of every member of the Clifton and Barrington families.

As is the case in the first iterations of the Clifton’s, Archer segments the story into chapters that focus on a given character and allows them to tell the story from their perspective. Emma reaches the morgue to see the sole victim’s body, finding that it belongs to Bruno, Sebastian’s friend. The soap opera that is the lives of the Clifton and Barrington families continues in this fourth entry in the Clifton Chronicles. Without such a glue, the tale could at best be used to show some sort of philosophical meaninglessness of life, where events that appear extremely important in real time turn at best into mildly interesting historic facts later. Marsden took her arm as they made their way down the steps toward the car; the first time he’d ever touched the mistress.Archer knows how to dole out tiny crumbs of suspense right up to the last page, which ends with…a really excellent cliffhanger. Jeffrey has performed an amazing job by making the readers attached to certain characters and then dropping them under the bus. No family saga is without a villain, this book has a good one, a well-drawn and believable character. That is, until another old rival, Lady Virginia Fenwick opens old wounds in an attempt to derail any happy future for Jessica and her extended family.
