It's not for you if you enjoy the darker gruesome crime thrillers but it's a wonderful cosy mystery series. This book has a relatively slow start, but once the storyline unfolds you find yourself completely lost in it. To get to the bottom of things, Valerie Dorcay and Richard offer catering services to the hastily resumed production.

To get to the bottom of things, Valérie d’Orçay and Richard offer catering services to the hastily resumed production. dream working on a film set but soon the dream turns to a nightmare when people on the set end up dead. Tasked with writing a glowing review of a luxurious hotel, the duo stumbles upon a perplexing murder that sends them into a world of secrets and treachery.

In true Pamplemousse fashion, the detective uncovers hidden motives and cleverly unravels the truth behind the crime, all while indulging in the region's delectable croissants and gastronomic delights. This terrific novel is the perfect antidote to forget for a few joyful hours the depressing world we live in! I'd recommend Death at the Chateau to any reader who enjoys humorous, action-packed "cosy" mysteries, especially those who enjoy European settings and plenty of cinematic references. I must say it took me a bit longer to get into this one due to the introduction of so many new characters at once, but this really is a hilarious read and perfect for fans of the ‘cosy crime’ genre.

I love this wonderful series and its laughing out loud wacky situations, its delightful quirkiness full of goofy slapstick and delicious verbal pyrotechnics, and last but not least its screwy cast of characters, peacocks and hens included.

I loved the plot: a film production company shooting a film based on Napoleon, cranky and egotistical actors, actresses being stalked, romance and two-timings, and of course, deaths under suspicious circumstances. I didn’t guess who was behind everything which made it all the more exciting and kept me reading to the end without wanting it to or to put it down. Having enjoyed the first two books, it was great to pick up this story again, and I found the mystery to be suitably twisting and with a satisfying conclusion. As expected in the third instalment of the Follet Valley Mystery series, this crazy pair find themselves in an impossibley bizarre situation. Their current job involves providing security to a production company shooting a historical film at the Château de Valençay as well as being personally responsible for the security of the main actress, Lionel Margaux.

My only regret is that the author hasn't written more in the series, crucially with the same characters.A TV/radio regular, he stars in Dave’s satirical TV show Unspun and Channel 5’s topical comedy Big Mouths.

It made me smile, perhaps not laugh out loud, but then I’m not a middle aged Englishman in France, so it’s hard to fully get Richard’s feelings. The solution to the mystery is far-fetched and disappointing, but the journey to get to it is delightful. Book 2: "Death and Croissants": The second book finds Monsieur Pamplemousse and Pommes Frites embarking on a journey to the bucolic French countryside. Richard is his usual quirky self and manages to find himself being promoted from the film’s security manager to press manager.
