At Wooburn Green Primary School, it is our aim that every child will learn to read, no matter what barriers they may have to their learning. The old book banding system is organised by criteria matched to the 3 cueing method not to phonics and is pretty meaningless.

Keep-up lessons match the structure of class teaching, and use the same procedures, resources and mantras, but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning. This progression is based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’.The school I teach at swapped to little wandle at the start of the year and we've had to reorganise, give away and purchase new books. Calendar arrived safely in plastic-free packaging - which I've not seen before with a calendar, so kudos for that. Supporting the DfE validated SSP programme - Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised these fully decodable readers are an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children.

Parents will also be invited to attend a phonics meeting with the Phonics Leader in the Autumn Term. All children no matter their attainment level are included in the lessons and we use ‘Keep Up’ interventions to make sure no child falls behind. By the end of the Rapid Catch-up programme, children should be reading with enough fluency and accuracy to access the curriculum in class, and to read with enjoyment and understanding. The 7+ books in the Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised series are designed for children aged 7+ who need more practice to acquire phonics skills. This is a much faster paced and age appropriate version of the Little Wandle scheme which enables children to access age appropriate reading and therefore the full curriculum much more rapidly, and also prepares them for the KS3 curriculum when they move onto secondary school.

It is essential not to use other strategies to work out words (including guessing words, deducing meaning from pictures, grammar, context clues or whole word recognition).
