Description

Very intense whisky, very strong. Nice combination of peat and sweet and fruity notes. In the nose the scent of eucalyptus/menthol is remarkable. How nice that, even nowadays, at Port Charlotte you don't have to stretch that far to get a really good dram in your glass. The PC 10 almost has to be careful that the Islay Barley doesn’t overtake it sooner or later.

Whisky Review: Port Charlotte 10 - The Whiskey Wash Whisky Review: Port Charlotte 10 - The Whiskey Wash

The medium duration finish is definitely shorter than I expected. When I tried it for the first time with less time in the glass, the finish seemed to be a bit longer–so medium-long, then–and also a bit more edgy, which I also liked. This time, however, the warm smoke wears off first, while the sweetness, along with spices and wood notes, stay on for a bit longer until they fade with a hint of vanilla and make me want to go for another round. This Port Charlotte 10 year old has been conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay alone. We are a young team with deep-rooted values, and an ambition to make the ultimate “Islay” Islay whisky. Port Charlotte distillery (also known as Rhins distillery and Lochindaal distillery) was a Scotch whisky distillery on the island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland from 1829 to 1929. The distillery was based in the village of Port Charlotte 2 miles (3 kilometres) southwest from the Bruichladdich distillery. [1] [2] History [ edit ] Employees of the distillery in the 2nd half of the 19th centuryPort Charlotte is Bruichladdich’s heavily-peated single malt, with a peating level of around 40ppm. Bruichladdich describes Port Charlotte as having ‘the power of peat with the elegance, complexity and floral top notes for which our Bruichladdich stills are famous’. Port Charlotte is a lovely village to holiday in as it has plenty to offer. The village has maintained a lot of its character although the area around the pier nowadays are mostly holiday lets. The views from several parts of the village over Loch Indaal are stunning. Take for instance the view down from School Street, or the view ahead when you enter the village. Bruichladdich is a bit unique in that there is no prescribed recipe for each release, no single way they have to make any given label. Instead, they distill, age and blend to make the best whisky they can from any given vintage or age range and their best result gets put out. A, slightly, inconsistent profile that’s consistently good.

Bruichladdich Distillery - Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Immediately fresh smoke that is both maritime and herbal aromas of a freshly mown meadow with a high proportion of wild herbs. Lime zest, lemon water, fresh ginger, forest honey. Seaweed in salt, warm asphalt. This freshness, combined with the clear smoky note, which lets herbs appear again and again, is really fun. Fire in Islay". Glasgow Herald. Scotland. 24 May 1861 . Retrieved 17 October 2021– via British Newspaper Archive. From 1855 the distillery was operated by John B Sheriff of Glasgow [7] and from 1895 J.B. Sherrif & Co Ltd until 1921. In 1921 it was acquired by Benmore Distilleries Limited which was taken over in 1929 by the Distillery Company Ltd. This resulted in the closure of the distillery. [8] I wanted to state this under a separate headline. Bruichladdich offers three different styles. Unpeated Laddie, heavily peated Port Charlotte and super heavily peated Octomore. Unlike the numbers we see on Octomore (which is 80+ ppm), Port Charlotte 10 Year Old is at 40 ppm. Currently, 78000 casks are being matured on the island. Why is this so important? Because a good portion of Islay whiskies are actually not matured on the island. After being distilled, whisky is taken to the mainland for its aging process. It is in the same country, but it is not Islay! Since climate conditions are quite different in Islay, the distillery is being very strict about aging on the island. Being Heavily Peated Definitely not overwhelmed by the sherry, you can already see that in the color, fresh and sour, caramel, I think Laddie has the clearest distillery character for me, vinous, a little pepper, vanilla, I deliberately don't name anything that goes in the direction of Oloroso, since this is not present at least at the beginning, then freshly sliced bread, and yes it becomes fruity, red berries, seasoning, Christmas spices, then becomes drier, leaving a malty sweetness

Dried wild herbs, lemon and lime peel zest, some grapefruit. Almond chips and hazelnut pieces compete with each other, marzipan and nougat. On the tongue, too, a note of warm asphalt slowly spreads, so that the taste is a fairly congruent continuation of the nose. The newly built footpath, the Loch Indaal Way, is ideal to visit the neighbouring village of Bruichladdich. It’s a little over a mile long and offers stunning views over Loch Indaal. Near the war memorial at Port Ban is a lovely secluded beach with clear water safe for swimming. And of course the main attraction of Bruichladdich is the Bruichladdich Distillery which draws thousand of visitors each year, and especially during the Islay Whisky Festival. If you want a bite to eat or a coffee you can do so at Debbies Minimarket, a few hundred metres further down from the distillery on your left.We believe to be called an Islay malt brings with it responsibilities – responsibilities to our community and to future generations here. Of nine distilleries on the island we’re the third smallest, yet we are its largest private employer; 80 of our 111 hundred strong team are based here. This means something. There too Bruichladdich planned to create a new distillery in which to produce heavily-peated whisky, but the plans never came to fruition, and it seems highly unlikely that distilling will return to the village since the acquisition of Bruichladdich by French company Rémy Cointreau in 2012.
